Balance in motion

Balance involves more than standing still.

It includes how we move, step, turn, adjust and recover as the demands around us change.

The Balance Program provides a structured way to develop those capabilities while keeping the programme relevant to everyday movement and the activities that matter to each person.

One programme · Three levels

The challenge changes with you.

Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced are starting points for the right level of challenge. Assessment and review help determine what fits now and what may change.

  1. Beginner

    Build control and movement options.

A structured starting point where support is readily available and tasks are generally more predictable.

  2. Intermediate

    Build adaptability.

Movement becomes more varied as direction, speed and everyday task demands change.

  3. Advanced

Use movement options under greater demand.

Training introduces greater variability and appropriate unpredictability for people ready for more challenging everyday and community movement.

Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced describe the level of challenge — not a person's age, intelligence, independence or worth.

What classes may address

Movement that matters beyond the class.

The mix of activities is guided by the person's assessment and goals. Classes may work on:

  • Strength and movement capacity
  • Reaching and controlled movement
  • Stepping in different directions
  • Balance recovery
  • Walking and turning
  • Adapting to changing movement demands
  • Moving while attention is shared
  • Activities relevant to everyday life

How progression works

Progress is more than doing more.

Progress does not simply mean more repetitions or less support. As someone develops, the programme may change the speed, direction, movement demand, environment or task.

Sometimes the appropriate progression is to move more effectively while retaining a rail or walking aid.

Advanced does not mean unsupported.

Connected to everyday life

Train for the movement you want to keep doing.

Walking, turning, reaching and responding when balance is challenged can all matter in daily life. The aim is to connect class work with the activities and places that matter to the person.

The Balance Program is one possible part of a wider plan. If another approach would fit better, the team can help identify an appropriate next step.

Assessment & review

Find the right starting point.

The appropriate level is informed by assessment, current function, goals and the support that helps the person move safely and effectively.

  1. Understand the person

Discuss current movement, meaningful activities and what has changed.

  2. Match the challenge

Identify whether a group class is appropriate and which level offers a useful starting point.

  3. Review and adjust

Review progress over time as function, goals or circumstances change.

Who may benefit?

The Balance Program may suit people who want to work on balance, mobility or confidence with movement in a clinician-guided group. The class format and starting level depend on individual assessment and suitability.

When individual care may come first

Recent unexplained falls, new or rapidly changing symptoms, or more complex needs may call for individual or medical assessment before a class. A weekly class is not a complete falls-risk plan for everyone.

Ask about a balance assessment

For a life-threatening situation, call Triple Zero (000). Sudden or severe changes need medical assessment before a routine class enquiry.
