Therapeutic Exercise Class

Your individual plan, supported in a shared session.

A supervised group setting for people taking part in the Therapeutic Exercise Program, with exercises, equipment, pace and support shaped around each person.

Before you join

An individual plan comes first

Before joining, you need an individual assessment and therapeutic plan that are current enough to guide your care. We also need to establish whether the group setting and available support can meet your needs.

If you already have a suitable Clinics GRP assessment, it may provide the starting point. A further appointment is arranged when needed to understand a change or establish an appropriate plan.

Shared setting

What a session involves

At the beginning of the session, let the clinician know about relevant changes in your health, symptoms or circumstances. These may affect the activity planned for that day.

You then work through suitable preparation, prescribed exercises and task practice, with observation and adjustments as needed. A shared activity may be used where it fits the individual plans of those taking part.

During and towards the end of the session, the clinician checks your response and discusses any agreed practice or next steps. The process provides structure while allowing your activities and support to be individualised.

Participation with a purpose

Your plan remains your own

Following the Ageing in Full philosophy, the class keeps your participation connected to what matters in your life. Maintaining an ability, using support or adapting a task can be worthwhile goals alongside improving physical capacity.

You do not need to keep pace with another participant. Your response helps guide your plan. If something is not working, it is a reason to review the approach with you.

Care and support

Support that fits your care

Class suitability considers the assistance you need, relevant precautions, communication and support, equipment, access and the clinical environment.

Supporting treatment can form part of the wider Therapeutic Exercise Program. Some treatment or support needs may be better addressed in a separate individual appointment. The team will discuss how individual and group care fit together for you.

As needs change

Review guides the next step

Brief checks during a session help monitor readiness and immediate response. Your wider plan also needs review to consider your goals, everyday activity and continuing treatment and supervision needs.

You may continue in the class, combine it with individual appointments, change your plan, consider another programme or finish supervised participation. The next step depends on your needs and preferences.
